Resting Camel and Flaming Mountains Extreme Heat

During the day at the Flaming Mountains in Turpan China temperatures under the sun can get up to 65C, maybe more. When we were there it actually was 65C. That is something like 145F. Hot, very hot.

Take a look at this guy. He doesn’t mind. Just hanging around there like nothing happens. Camels are amazing animals.

How are humans keep themselves cool in such heat? Some choose the following tools:

While the locals are making very interesting architectural choices. Second level with all those holes draws hot air up and keeps the ground level at somewhat manageable temperatures.

Annoyingly, I had some reflection from the car window, we were driving as I took them and in such bright light the map on my lap was reflecting in the window.

Beijing Blue Skies… Not

Blue Skies in Beijing? This is a normal day in the Chinese Capital. Smoggy, white air. This was taken from the 14th floor in down town Beijing. We spent there about one week in late July and we did not see a glimpse of blue sky or sun. Sun was trying to break through this white mess, but never succeeded. Temperatures outside were around 95F, with humidity it felt like 105F. I didn’t have any problems with breathing and walked a lot, but just the view of this air was disgusting.

Beijing is an interesting city and a lot going for it, but till they figure out how to clean it up it won’t be super travel destination.

Twenty years ago, when I lived in China, it would be impossible to see the following in public. China went a long way and these days youngsters are not afraid to show little affection when they fill like it and where they want it.

Flaming Mountain in Turpan China is one of the hottest spots on earth. The legend goes as following: “Tangseng and his disciples are stranded in the Flaming Mountain, and the Iron-fan Princess refuses to lend her palm-leaf fan to Wukong. A firce battle is to break out at any time. Riding on his golden-eye animal, the Bull-demon King is staring angrily at Tangseng and his disciples and is ready to fight at any moment.” This place is awesome.

Pretty Knifes to cut some Lamb

International Grand Bazaar is a must visit if you happen to be in Urumqi. A lot of cool stuff, interesting people and it just so different than anything else. Today’s photo is of knife stand. There were many of them, so if you don’t like one of these knifes you can find something different at another stand. I like the big one, top, right corner.
