La Perla is the neighborhood in the old San Juan, right outside the city walls, next to the the Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery. Supposedly it is the center of all kind of organized crime activities, such as drug trade and arms dealing. We didn’t go into it, so I didn’t observe any arm dealings first hand. While it looks really colorful from this angle, if you walk along the high side, it does look somewhat run down, which is why it probably attracts all kind of questionable element.
It is certainly stunning from this angle!

Love this colorful place!
Very old,colored houses.Love this photo.
Colorful!!!
It maybe colorful but the brightness doesn’t extend down to the streets there.
The favellas in Brazil are the same way. It is shocking being from the U.S. with our idea of being “poor” which doesn’t stack up to being poor outside of our borders. The importance of having a safety net for the people.
Great photo as always!
what a captivating image! so vibrant.
I’d been down those streets for photo pix’s. Real poor and run down. You captured beauty beyond it.
Very nice …
How did you like your visit in general? I have lived in PR all my life and I have never gone into La Perla either because of the rumors. There is a Calle 13 song about it, he is very proud of having been raised there.
